Judging Bike Critter Art for SMMoA Tour da Arts

Posted on 06/27/2012

Today was the big day when I served on the Santa Monica Museum of Art‘s (SMMoA’s) expert artists panel to select a winner for the museum’s 2012 Tour da Arts materials. If you’re not familiar with Tour da Arts, watch this video right away.

It was great to hang out with SMMoA’s education staff and meet my fellow judge/juror: Saelee Oh. She’s an artist doing beautiful work that feels both contemporary and nostalgic. Check out her website.

She has good taste in bike critters, too!

The SMMoA Tour da Arts 2012 Bike Critter Contest received lots of good looking and whimsical critters on bikes: swan, fish, pig, lizard, and even some unidentifiable – though clearly bike critters. I can’t tell you the winner… until the museum announces it… but it’s a great piece: fun and will look great on Tour da Arts postcards and spokecards, and hopefully t-shirts, jerseys, panniers, balloons, intersection murals, brass plaques, temporary and permanent tattoos, custom loaves and cakes, crop-circles, custom blimps, orbiting satellites, and sky-writing. Or at least some of those things.

Afterward the judges and SMMoA staff rested from our vigorous selection process – in this awesome big spiderweb of a 5-person multi-layer hammock that’s installed in the middle of Bergamot Station.

Mark your calendars (or push around some electrons) now: Santa Monica Museum of Arts Tour da Arts, volume 4!, takes place Sunday August 19th 2012! It’s a bike ride, a tour of city culture, a celebration of art and bikes, and, o yeah, a lot of fun.

More details at the SMMoA website as the event gets closer. See you there.
